Today Molly took half a day off to go out with Starfish, upon his urging, wearing a stylish new frock she got yesterday, although she made herself very clear about her priorities, which were: she is very dedicated to her career and the success or failure of it lies in only her decision-making, therefor all she can spare is half an hour, if that is not enough, then …
Poor Starfish told me about it getting ready to go meet her, and stated, since the desirable presence of his girlfriend is quite rare these days he has to grab whatever he can get; they wanted to meet at the Library Cafe, which is off shore from Cafe Leben, so the chance to run into noisy fellow actors is small.
Molly repeated once more, the main reason why she came to the city is to pursue an acting career full-heartedly which would require 100% commitment, meaning love affairs can only happen if they don’t get in the way of that and not demanding anything of Molly that would mean a distraction of her ultimate goal.
Further she needed time to make important professional connections with people who can help her in her further career, as she was determined to stay on track also after “Was Wollen Sie Von Mir?” has been staged; small detail information she had met on stage a young choreographer from Paris, France named Elle (go figure!) and the two were assigned upon Vladimir recognizing a certain valuable chemistry between them, to work out a special solo dance that Molly would perform and Elle was to choreograph, the “peacock dance” and that would require extra time, but there was no way in the world Molly would let a chance like that pass her up not for anything in the world and if Starfish would give a s*** on her she would not even have to explain such a thing.
Starfish was sitting and listening to all that and said not too much, but I guess one way or another it sank in and left an impression. Anyways, then Molly stood up and left for her rehearsal, leaving Starfish probably picking up some bed-bugs hiding in the red plush cafe chairs. There was a flyer some band is looking for a drummer, maybe Starfish could give them a call, it would be something to do other than dwelling over his ambitious Molly.

Molly is for once not at her secret rehearsals at “Cafe Leben” but out shopping for clothes, claiming she has nothing at all to wear. (The last time I saw her room I could not help but notice a ton of her clothes being very elegant, some with a serious price-tag.) She left Starfish at home, with the comment he is “making her nervous”. Instead she went with some people from the theatre group, God knows who, because the rehearsals are closed to the public, boyfriends included in the excluded ones.
Starfish is pissed, which is understandable, and finds nothing to do with himself besides waiting until Molly comes back and then looking like that was the very last thing on his mind.
I make use of the situation and ask him to model for a quick session outside, thinking maybe we can use some for ShinySkySituation-poster, but he is in a particularly foul mood chain-smoking (since he completed his sex-change he also has taken up smoking), non-stop ranting about how shitty, pretentious and self-involved everyone is, and that everyone around him is just using him (I agree to that, but he does not hear it), and how arrogant they are, that they live by the wrong standards, and that he will absolutely never ever waste a single second of his life starting from right now on with any of these people ever again.
The power-rant gives him a very mysterious and angry look that is perfect for the pictures, but he is getting quickly annoyed standing in the sun posing and wants to go to the pub for a beer, which I have to pay for because he hasn’t got any money (I knew that), so we go and I get to take a few extra shots there, that aren’t bad at all.
Poor thing Starfish… love is a bitch!

Finally an evening when Molly is not staying late for rehearsals at “Cafe Leben” and spending a simple TV night with her sweetheart Starfish, first time after his completed sex-change, as far as I know and as far as I am able to take a few snap shots of both of the with each other. Starfish wasn’t very talk active, but then again he is never, not when I am around anyways, and Molly was as usual chatty, but they were holding hands, so maybe all is well or well enough between the two.

ホテル Hotel – the Slide Show: ON SOUND – does Nan Goldin buy the rights for her sound track? and some Švankmajer input
April 10, 2017
So the slide-show has premiered to a miniature audience, yet with very positive feed-back and the show must go on. Starfish reportedly completed his sex-change and is now a full man and the president of the United States is bombing Syria. The show must go on.
Shortly before WWIII (this may be one day referred to as “pre-war-work”, although I HOPE NOT) I am promoting the slide-show at other venues, basically whoever seems open to more screenings, bringing up some questions regarding soundtrack.
Nan Goldin famously so showed her slide-show for the first time in 1979 with a soundtrack compiled of songs by various more or less famous rock bands, some indie, some not so indie.
Aperture Foundation who also published “The Ballad of Sexual Dependency” in book form a year after the slide show premiere in 1988 http://aperture.org/shop/nan-goldin-ballad/ and further: “on the occasion of the third printing of Nan Goldin’s Ballad of Sexual Dependency we have assembled a YouTube playlist based on Goldin’s original slideshow soundtrack”
which you can (partially) listen to here:
So far if you happen to attempt listening in USA, omitted from the playlist are currently:
Yoko Ono’s “She Hits Back”,
Charlotte Rae’s version of Petula Clark’s “Downtown”,
Maria Callas “Casta diva” (1958) by Vincenzo Bellini “Norma” (1831),
and a not listed song by “The Velvet Underground” stating: “The YouTube account associated with this video has been terminated due to multiple third-party notifications of copyright infringement”.
The remaining seven songs you can currently still listen to through this link anyways, probably if you go to a live show all of them, I would assume.
Exactly my question: how about Nan Goldin and the songs she picked to play during her live slide shows? Did she buy rights over each one of them? Is there any conflict? Did it not apply in 1985 when she premiered the slide show? Maybe lesser so that today in 2017.
There actually is an APERTURE article by Greil Marcus to the soundtrack topic “Songs left Out of Nan Goldin’s Ballad of Sexual Dependency” , but it doesn’t address the question of how does an emerging artist go about using well-known pop/rock/whatever music he or she wants to combine with work made as soundtrack. Is it even a good idea, besides the legality of it, in terms of creativity?
Sometimes I am tempted to think that Nan Goldin is not the talented genius people market her as, but her one notable work, “The Ballad” seems to be famous for other reasons, one of them it is a documentary easily emotionally accessibly “as if one was right there” for “those who had not been there”, one of the various magic tricks photography is able to do. In her case, like certain autobiographies, it applies to people who are never anywhere really themselves, paying the price for going, but would love to be on a weekend vacation, in and out and free entrance. The point is, a certain life style does not just plunge onto you overnight or because one hopped the wrong train, but like an apprenticeship you start out as the one who sweeps the studio and then you watch for a while before the master allows you to touch any tools. Years later you get to keep your pots. It’s not a powder in a tiny paper-bag you rip open and mix into a glass of water and microwave the whole thing. And people who do other things with thier lives (cleaner and more profitable ones I assume) that probably underlie exactly the same rules there, too, they do not realize that. Personally I would never want to be a CEO of a corporation for a day, so the temptation of collecting pictures of high positioned executives in their office is low, practically zero.
I see occasionally Nan Goldin’s attempts at fashion photography, and the recipe “take one or more skinny depressed looking young people and drape them casually in a dark scruffy apartment interior, ideally involving a cheap old-fashioned sofa in rust-red velvet”, and realize that doesn’t work. Not a single time, no matter how fluffy the model’s hair is and how long their legs are and how terribly bored they look, and Nan Goldin says in interviews that she is not interested in the work and shooting models.
https://fraenkelgallery.com/videos/an-evening-with-nan-goldin-and-vince-aletti-remembering-peter-hujar (scroll to 8:26 min)
The question which was proposed to her by more famous people than myself, apparently Peter Hujar at one occasion, why she is doing it then in the first place, has not been publicly answered so I am left to conclusions. If it is her idea of “money has to be made somehow” that makes a lot of sense, but personally I would never water down my own work “meeting somewhere in the middle”, because the few occasions I tried the works was equally ridiculous and and far from what I normally do and the wage for it wasn’t worth the prostitution. Those commissions I can be proud of (so I list them on my CV) were paid with peanuts by people who also followed a personal vision and consequently had not figured out how to make money at their own lifetime with that.
Gladly Nan Goldin’s failure in fashion photography makes me realize, the beauty of life can not be rented “instant just add water” from modelling agencies, but only earned through life experience; the same question applies of course sound as much as to images.
I shot a short video (not frame-by-frame animation as most of my animated films) of “Billy’s Funeral” and the sound track is a version of Franz Schubert’s “Ave Maria, D. 839, Op. 52, No. 6” (1825); the sound is what we were playing during the funeral, which precisely is: a cover by Mirusia Louwerse /André Rieu; but obviously because posting art or whatever online counts legally as a form of exhibition there is a copyright question and as a result of this specific music I picked the clip will now come with odd subtitled advertisements, which in this case is fine by me, the irony matches perfectly with Billy’s fate.
However, for future exhibitions I realize for several reasons I will need to change the sound for something more authentic, one being because canned music is crap, bluntly put.
Currently I am using in my own slide-show the famous Janis Joplin cover of “Little Girl Blue” (1969), originally published 1935, written by Lorenz Hart and composed by Richard Rodgers; here is the long list of covers as known to Wikipedia: “Little Girl Blue”
I did send an inquiry to SONY, who hold a 1999 copyright over the version I am currently using, through their site one can request, but so far no reply, time will tell.
I certainly would also heavily object if anyone downloads my stuff and uses it for their own art whatsoever without asking my permission first, in particular in case of a world famous artist, which Nan Goldin only became over time. But on the other hand that leaves me in the situation that because of the copyright law I have to either use only self created sound or work made by friends. I admit, being a fan of fire of Czech composer Zdeněk Liška (who collaborated up to his death in 1983 with Jan Švankmajer doing the sound for his early short films), it is nicer to go the 100 extra steps and create your own fabulous soundtrack from scratch, which is anyways the route I am planning to take most of the time, time being exactly the issue that stands in the way of doing so.
But besides time and situations when one needs something fast, is it possible to communicate the same emotional reaction with abstracted sound as a traditional music piece well known on to a wider audience inclusive its attached history can cause? Sometimes I think at this point in time I might like the emotional meaning a certain more well known song took on within a certain culture.
* Some people seem to not be able to get into the chemistry of Liška sound with Švankmajer image, deleting the sound adding their own corny garage band sound with it and post it back on various social media sharing platforms (making me cringe every time).
Interesting enough, Jan Švankmajer could not find a replacement for Liška and is now using classical music for his films, but technically the copyright discussion comes up all over again, assuming he is using the sound from orchestra recordings of some kind or another.
An interview to the question is here:

PS: I can already hear the complaints on this post, that yes, the part about Nan Goldin is very interesting and the part about sound is, and the one about Švankmajer/Liška, but they do not belong together. Oh man…

Yesterday Starfish came home from the hospital – all a man now. We took him out for a drink, that is Chiaki, Larry and ChoCho (who paid the tab), only Molly was at “Cafe Leben” rehearsing “Was wollen Sie von mir?” as pretty much all the time now, so that was a bummer for Starfish, I guess, but he didn’t show it, only he was smoking quite a lot, which I hadn’t seen him do before.
We all congratulated him to the great outcome of the operation and at some point Chiaki apparently couldn’t help herself and gave him a big smack right on the mouth, that was a bit of a surprise to us, but it can never hurt in tough times, can it?

ホテル Hotel – a fire in the hospital, ChoCho’s charity performance and the only worthy purpose for art is fighting for freedom
April 1, 2017
Starfish is still in the hospital and people telephone in regularly, but still no visitors allowed, hospital rule. This morning we found out there had been a small fire on the ward where Starfish is, scary, but apparently they got it extinguished immediately and no-one got hurt.
Very glad and grateful that we even have such hospitals were we can get sex changes.
ChoCho gave a charity performance, not at “Cafe Leben” which is still booked full time by Vladimir and his troupe rehearsing “Was wollen Sie von mir?”, so instead at the “Bird Cage”.
It’s a pretty radical routine inclusive a media show and some pretty strange tools, where he eventually takes everything off inclusive in the final pose also his wig, which generally makes the crowd rage.
He donated the complete profits to the hospital, stating: “The only worthy purpose for art is fighting for freedom!” Who would disagree with that.

Mike Bradley sent me a fabulous harmonica sound track. Mike is a genius, I know that, but he is also a crazy genius (of course, are there non-crazy geniuses at all?), so what happened was for the slide show I looked through various things as sound-track, recorded some new stuff, was not happy with any, and by chance found something from about half a year ago in my house, where we are listening to Screaming Jay Hawkins playing “I put a spell on you” and Mike is messing with a very nice harmonica I had shown him, and luckily I recorded it.
It is very great, only we are also goofing around, laughing and joking and I thought, this would be great “without” talking and joking, so I called Mike and explained it to him and told him I needed him to find a harmonica and play and record the same piece without chatter. Very simple, very easy, right?
I also sent him a play list of other things, if he wanted to do extra, so we could pick and combine. Well. Finally today I get the soundtrack which is A; fabulous and B; none of the things I had asked him or what was on the play list and ZERO Screaming Jay and ZERO “I put a spell on you”.
That’s Mike, the genius. A pain in the ass and yet: irresistible.
Leaves me sitting, editing for some extra xyz hours sound track and remixing slide show details and a mini clip “dog barking” to make it all work. Yes, we will do many more like that and they will be great (I hope)….

Hilton Als claims, it’s OK if the bulb burns out, because in the 80’s NYC audiences would simply sit and wait:
“… In small venues around town, Goldin would hold the projector as she manually clicked through images; if the bulb on the machine burned out, she’d run home and get another one. Audiences waited. …”
I hope in the 21st century LA audience (allegedly way more chill) will also wait, it will take me only an hour, roughly, to get that other bulb.

Plenty of obituaries have been written in rise of the occasion, which can be easily found online, some of them I will link here, but please look for more if you are interested in the subject:
and please also watch this talk given by photographer Linda Troeller on “Living Inside the Chelsea Hotel”:
The project ホテル Hotel has been loosely inspired, next to Nan Goldin’s “Ballad of Sexual Dependency” and other artists and their work, by the HOTEL CHELSEA, but more so by the stories and legends about its famous tenants and where they interfere and symbolize my own personal experiences as an artist and person.
The project was started over one year ago in January 2016 and has been ongoing since. I added characters, slowly, as the process of creating the puppets is time and energy consuming, and stories, some are masking personal experiences, some are in relation to daily happenings in politics and social life, but each are meaningful to me, otherwise I would have overlooked them and not been able to comment in form of an artistic translation.
The project has also so far been “my longest long-term project”, “Each reflection of myself echoes a different emotion at me” being the first runner up with a making time of nine months. I was hoping to make ホテル Hotel a “really long-term” project, ideally ongoing over years. I have learned from other projects, in particular “Each reflection” how fulfilling and rewarding it is dedicating myself over long periods of time to one single project and diving very deep into the subject matter, meaning ultimately one’s own psychology from a certain aspect, undertaking my own psycho-analysis by creating, watching and reflecting.
I am not sure anymore this can happen as planned, which in itself reflects the nature of the issue.
I have been asking myself, especially after the project gained some publicity through exhibitions in different countries, what the project means for me and what is the purpose I am working on it. Where the “Each reflection”-project was deliberately a collaboration, and it was my intention creating a project to give other people a voice to express something about themselves and their lives and take myself to the greatest extent out of this process, the project ホテル Hotel is very personal and through it I am investigating my own life; most of the various characters with some very few cameo exceptions are versions of myself, reflecting my own experience and perspectives, masked in form of a group of people and their daily life and choices, and the hotel itself symbolizes me and my life experience and perspectives; in that sense the project is comparable to Mark Hogancamp’s MARWENCOL.
But it seems not only to be that situations occur and I re-tell them in masked version through the story of the hotel, it seems also to apply the other way around: I tell a story through the images of puppets that then seems to happen, parallel to that, in real life.
Parallels of puppets and their originals they stand for or are based on have already become obvious to me when I was frequently asked by collectors and gallerists to sell the figures that stand model for the participants of the “Each reflection”-project.
I was not able to sell them because I felt an inseparable connection between the figures and the people they symbolize, which is the reason why I created a follow-up project “I’m going into the forest” , in which I ritually de-eared the figures, in order to make them permanently unsaleable, (this also because I do need to earn money and don’t trust myself if the temptation seems easy and considerably lucrative.)
Also this current project has shown such a connection between told story and story that is happening, which I don’t have full understanding and insight on, but I am observing it and am cautious of it. I am not a superstitious person, but after having lived in multiple different cultures that all apply different thinking systems on the subject I am open to options I may have previously not been thinking about.
The current recent political events have in a very short time had a strong impact onto my life as on the people living around me and consequently I am considering conclusions that are unexpected and that will interfere with my current work.
Also by thinking and researching a lot about the projects by other artists that inspired my own, and even more so the reaction of the audience over time to these projects, in particular to Nan Goldin’s “Ballad of Sexual Dependency” as well as now, re-newed interest in the HOTEL CHELSEA I realize these are projects that symbolize youth and bohemia and in particular the medium photography has to be always about the past, as there seems currently no way to take a photograph of the future.
I am no longer young, but currently, at the time of writing middle-aged. I am no longer free to spend my nights out in the streets, I live in an apartment and am not squatting with friends in empty houses, and I am no longer able to move to a new country without endless preparations.
I work every day coherently on bodies of work, where admittedly the effort that goes into marketing the work is equal if not bigger than making it.
It is very questionable if this can still be called “bohemia”, likewise I am not sure of work created randomly as the love-child of a creative explosion of an intensive life experience is still marketable, which applies by now the same to visual art as well as music, where the product used to be marketable in small affordable increments of show tickets and opposed to at least four or more digit piece-by-piece gallery prices.
These thoughts made me realize the project ホテル Hotel must be about youth, freedom and a nostalgia for both that is equally shared by myself as well as a general group of the population perhaps of any culture and any social class. Whilst I fondly look back on my youth I do not wish to re-live it and am happy to be where I am in time, but I am over and over questioning if the profession of a visual artist that is trying to put in what is needed to be successful is still or has ever been anything that can be considered a symbol of freedom.
It seems to me, if one wants to be financially successful one has to be willing to be the least free person on earth, accepting a life style that although it markets the artist as a creative, independent and free spirit, in reality turns out people as “artists” that are worse than slaves, because they voluntarily have to take on the most submissive and least free-spirited attitude possible in order to be successful, which makes a job in a cubicle office look adventurous and rewarding.
Or the other way around: which office worker would be willing to over and over send out job-applications and interview multiple times per month, sometimes per week or even several times a day? Some of these applications are on paid basis, and particularly in the media “photography” this has become such a perfect business idea that some galleries are financed by the amount of budding artists, eager to pay for having someone look at their work.
In the State of California in the performing arts the artist is protected from this practice at least in theory by the The Krekorian Talent Scam Prevention Act of 2009, recently brought to discussion through a case in February (2017), when the Los Angeles City Attorney Mike Feuer‘s office filed criminal misdemeanor charges against the operators of five casting workshops for allegedly charging actors for auditions in violation. Are visual artists protected by the same or a similar law?
Who other than an artist would be willing to accept refusals in bulk, if he/she even is graced with a response to an application or introduction? Not to even go into the plenty of times that female artists are being strung along with the promise of some form of marketing of their work as long as they keep up the person’s illusion of sexual interest in return, only to be tossed immediately once that is clarified and out of the question?
All this is the absurdest abuse (whilst ALL ABUSE IS ABSURD) and much of it would be case for a lawsuit in any other job, and yet it is completely normal for a working artist to do and to endure without complaint.
I do not experience the freedom so mythically connected to the life on artist, nor do I see any other full-time artist experience such freedom at all, no matter on what level of success he or she operates;
this is a freedom I felt very strongly as long as I was not professionally marketing my work and was simply making it for the sake of researching things and expressing what I felt to have found.
Instead I feel to be an outcast * of society, either way, successful or not, as soon as I engage in marketing my work on a higher level, perhaps some very few exceptions existing, in which I get the chance to work with equally eccentric gallerists, which is not the norm and very treasured.
I see myself surrounded by working artists who are in exactly the same situation, no matter if they feel it, hate it or love it, because the work and the nature of it that seems necessary to even be able to work professionally is constant and it seems to me degrading, seemingly mostly begging for some form of “audience” with professionals that market art, this must be to such an overhang that as a result such places and people fight off the many advances artists send their way, and the most important question to clarify first of all is: how to get to them anyways?
All this seems to have reached an extent that is bizarre to me.
If there is no interest to support the artist’s work it should not be made, and the artist should look for something else to do what is in higher demand, that a society is willing and able to support. That means a certain perhaps very poetic work at certain times of mankind will not exist. Maybe it will resurface at some point in time.
The question for me is, realizing this, where do I locate my own work and how much longer will I be willing to create it? When will ホテル Hotel be bought out and have to close its doors?
Josiane Keller “Starfish on the sofa 5” (2016)
At the same time “artist” is perhaps one of the few (the only?) profession that is commonly perceived as one anyone can claim to be simply by calling himself so, regardless if he or she has undergone academical training or not or how many years of professional experience he/she has. The question by now is even: aren’t the more wanted artists those who aren’t academically trained, but those who as a living person provide enough stimulation to trigger the voyeuristic fantasies of the bored Bourgeoisie, irrelevant of the quality of their actual work, but more as a form of idol who’s paraphernalia we can purchase and collect? Kissing the pope’s ring still seems to bring some of us closer to God.
And yet it seems important that there is a time span passed to acknowledge such personalities as Gesamtkunstwerk (“complete work of art”), not because all of a sudden our taste has grown up, but because it seems to me, and that is what I experience, most contemporaries in the position of professionally not making but judging art feel extremely threatened by these type of artists, and it becomes safe taking a second look once at least 20, 30 years have passed, perhaps because prior to that, when both are in their youth and same age, the life style of the bohemian artist questions the existence of the art judge too much. Now both have lost their youth, perhaps it comes down to that, and both had their chance to spread their genes, and if they haven’t, too bad, but we are no longer in concurrence with each other, now we can be friends.
A few years ago Nan Goldin was invited to create a show based on paintings of the Louvre, Paris, the result is her project: “Scopophilia” (Louvre Museum, 2010-2011, after that travelling and excerpts shown in various leading galleries). At the time the director of the Louvre was Henry Loyrette. Apparently the project was initiated by Patrice Chéreau, the gay stage and film director (“L’Homme Blessé” / The Wounded Man, 1983, Jean-Hugues Anglade’s first noticeable role playing a young hustler), but apparently this fact was not emphasized upon in the promotion of the show:
Nan Goldin created her most famous work “The Ballad of Sexual Dependency” between 1979 and 1986 in NYC (before it was a “must” to live there and consequently was affordable and dangerous, at least where Nan Goldin lived). Henry Loyette at the same time, 1978 to 1999 was curator at the Musée d’Orsay, Paris.
Henry Loyette born May 31st 1952 and Nan Goldin born Sep 12th 1953 are almost the same age, would Henry Loyette in the 80’s and 90’s have had an interest in befriending Nan Goldin when they were both between 26 and 34 years old, whilst she was right in the middle of living meaning making what is now her most cherished work? Would he have talked to her then, had he met her in a bar, or would they even ever have frequented the same type of bars?
Would he have, as a curator of a major French art museum, have attended one of her early slide-shows? And if he had, perhaps by chance or to have a laugh, would he have contacted her, expressed his interest and suggested at some point in the near or far future a possible exhibition of her work?
Or would he have thought of it is something “with some interesting points, but in need of more time to mature”? Would he have asked her to meet up some time soon for a studio visit, only to be told that there is no studio and the pictures taken are not staged but simply her snap-shots of her and friends’ daily life?
Nan Goldin – Ballad of Sexual Dependency Slide Show-flyer
What if she had said, why don’t you come next week I am having a party? Would he, had this taken place, felt comfortable at the party, or even on the way to it? Or would any attempted conversation collapsed because of unbridgeable differences in communication style, to begin with?
One more interesting observation: there are a number of photographs by Nan Goldin that depict her friends shooting up in NYC as well as other countries, in particular Italy. I have seen these images frequently when I was younger in photo-books, but now despite the omni-potent internet, I can’t seem to find them any more? Where is the image formerly so often seen of the “Junkie-Madonna”, a porcelain statue covered with syringes and notes of believers in some town in Italy, if I recall currently it was taken in Positano? Why are these unpleasant images nowhere to be seen any more, that threaten the romantic dream of the social outlaws with grim reality of addiction, miserable illness and death? Do they seem unsuitable in the marketing strategy of the brand © Nan Goldin or her managers? She has to be wild, untameable but not too nasty?
Is it not often that the most interesting artists are not those who have never seen the bourgeoisie in their upbringing, but instead those who were born right into it and who couldn’t buy into the masked life style and pretended group pleasantries and violently broke out of it, deliberately seeking salvation from emotional suffocation in the opposite, whatever that might be? Isn’t that the reason why both sides seem to look down upon each other? Is it a sign of youth to feel that way so strongly and over time we mellow down?
Josiane Keller “Vincent” (* 16th Jun, 1934 – † 14th Feb, 2017)
The differences in social class seems, if not back then, then at least now, too big to be overcome in real life on the 21st century art market, and yet it is this “out-of-reach high up art marketing class” that is majorly interested in the intimate life style of the “low-life scrambling bohemian artists”, it seems even the lower the better, and as can be seen in the example of bohemian New York City: by its own existence destroys the natural habitat of its most beloved prey by making it in-affordable living a life-style that allows thinking people time, reflection and self-reflection, and consequently is left with work that obviously seems to be comfortable, but is ultimately boring, unfulfilling and meaningless, even to themselves.
These thoughts falling together with the death of Stanley Bard made me add his life data to my own character of the caretaker of the hotel Vincent, by doing so the story although currently still unfolding and being told in the present tense, it is clear this is a story about the past.
* perhaps there is a way by self-labeling as an ‘Outsider Artist’ ?
And further: Japanese people believe dolls protect us. So that might be reason enough to keep working.

Well, that’s the way the cookie crumbles. Larry and Starfish came across a sign someone was looking to start up a “Psych Rock Group” and feeling he might do some extra gigs outside of ShinySkySituation to expand his repertoire he called up and met the band singer in the pub.
Josiane Keller “want to join a psych rock group” (2017)
As the devil never sleeps it turns out just the very same guy from the other evening, the one with the wife who had already then such issues with Larry smearing the ‘Granada guitarist’ story on his sandwich. Obviously a very picky guy who likes holding a grudge.
And the rest is history, which means in more detail that Larry has now a big bandage around a broken wrist and a small one on his bleeding nose, for quite some time one may assume. Luckily someone called ChoCho (who else would be so generous?) came up with a bottle of some very fine whiskey to celebrate the occasion, because what else is left to do?

ホテル Hotel – Alexander is back from the hospital, a successful outdoor poster photo shoot and Larry got hit on the nose
February 23, 2017
Alexander was allowed home from the hospital and everyone is majorly relieved. Apparently somehow he had come in touch with rat poison, maybe playing outside stuck something in his mouth when we were not looking or God knows. Who the hell would put rat poison outside is anyways a big question, but luckily so far he is fine again and the doctors told Laila just keep an eye on his condition and come back should anything get worse again.

Whilst Laila and Alexander came home Larry, Molly, Chiaki, Starfish and Viola were out again for that poster shoot by some waterfalls, this time of the animals only Goebbels came along, and apparently this time the photo shoot worked out and they could all say good-bye to the kimonos, Starfish being the happiest about that.
Further, each one got paid on the spot, and thanks to Molly’s negotiating talent the fee for Starfish was substantial and included payment for the other shots too, we were worried about. So Starfish announced he now has enough money to pursue the final major step for his sex change, which is another reason for everyone to celebrate.
Josiane Keller “friends on the bridge” (2017)
Larry took him out for a drink man-to-man that night, but sadly that went wrong because they were hitting on a woman in the pub showing off with the band ShinySkyStituation, and her husband was not into it, in particular he seemed to have an issue with Larry, who had pulled his favourite stunt, claiming to be a Flamenco guitarist from Granada, Spain, which is total bullshit, even if he has about any ethnicity in the world combined in his veins, next to other substances he occasionally adds to these. He is really from Granada, Colorado, a tiny nest, and the only noticeable asset of it is the Japanese internment camp that once was there, where his dad was born. As a result of a misunderstanding Larry once found out the other version is way more effective, so he uses that at times, some of which are ill chosen.
And so it ended up with Starfish making a runner back home and Larry arriving 45 minutes later with a bleeding nose. He had a massive panic because the guy had been coming after him and Larry was not sure if he had managed to sneak into Cooks Lane unseen, so he thought the guy might now know where he lives and mumbled something from a getting restraining order.
Chiaki simply gave him a tissue for his nose and told him to skip being such a jerk in the future and he would not have such issues. I am not sure if Larry is capable of giving up being a jerk in the future, in particular when he thinks he has an audience, I doubt it, but he also has a very compassionate side to himself, so let’s just say, it’s typically Larry and we all are sure he’ll be fine (until next time….)

At the last photo shoot Chiaki must have injured her left shoulder somehow hanging from that branch all morning, so she needed medical assistance and some rest before the next appointment:

And this morning there was supposed to be the second appointment for the Tokyo poster photo shot, everyone all dolled up in kimonos and the animals with ribbons and what not was going to the specified place, driving rather, only once we arrived there was … nobody, meaning the art director was nowhere to be seen and so everyone was just standing around waiting, hoping he’d show eventually.
Larry took his geta off, as he wasn’t used to having a strap like that between his tender toes and Viola managed to keep the cats entertained and distract them from pulling their silk ribbons off their necks.
Same as last time the dog came along and although he had settled down that much that he would not try and snap people constantly like last time by the rock; at first he sat patiently near Starfish, who held his leash, but obviously without the snapping game he must have been feeling terribly bored, because after half an hour sitting actually surprisingly quietly he started howling like a whole pack of wolves. I can’t give him any blame, but it did hurt everyone’s ears eventually.
After two hours waiting and no show we all went home, Starfish mumbling something of having enough of wearing that bloody kimono.
Not sure if there will be payment for today, I hope so, time will tell.

Whilst Starfish, Molly, Chiaki and Larry are out for photo-shootings and God knows what else Laila is doing her own thing, many revolving around Alexander, understandably so. Alexander just turned one year old and the family from Tehran sent gifts without end, which Laila gracefully accepted, not without several snarky comments about the very same people. Vincent said nothing much to it and Starfish is too busy with his own issues to be jealous

Volume II of the outdoor shot with kimonos. Molly was the undisputed star, of course, and everyone hurling around her. They wanted her to pose as if she was eating the forbidden fruit of the Garden of Eden, and she had to pose with some odd red fruit, but nobody knew for sure what kind of fruit it was and we thought it might be poisonous, so she could not really eat it. But to take several shots with her posing was a bit tiring, holding that thing to her mouth making sure nothing would come near her lips; in the end professional as Molly is she pulled it off, she’s OK right now, so obviously nothing happened:

Larry was to hold MiuMiu, who does not like being held by anyone but Viola perhaps, only Viola had to guide Goebbels, and had her own problems:

and Starfish, despite the vertigo pulled it off, too, or maybe because of it he sat straight up in perfect posture, gracefully on that rock with a stone face that made him appear shy and innocent (nobody will know he was about to throw a fit when he had to climb back down and Larry, Molly and Chiaki altogether had to coax and help):

Chiaki was not quite herself, she looked good, no doubt, but her usual confidence did not quite shine, which for a kimono lady is maybe quite appropriate. I am not sure if she just agreed to participate to have an eye what is going on with Molly and Starfish, seemingly she gets on OK now with Molly and also between Starfish and her were no more major fights recently, as far as we know anyways:

Things for the poster photo-shoot proceed slowly because of many reasons, really, one of them being that the rehearsals for “Was Wollen Sie von Mir?” are being held parallel, and in full swing, and it seems since day one everyone on is in fights with everyone, Vladimir and Jan for starters and now really the whole crew. As for Molly, she is trying to hang in there seeing it apparently as a potentially highly imperative career step, consequently upsetting the lonely Starfish, at the same time trying to keep him happy with connecting to the poster shoot, just where Starfish thought it will be a sort of romantic moment for the two love-birds only, the drama about the ultra-feminine kimono aside, it turns out it is supposed to be a photo-shoot for a group of friends to advertise this Tokyo hotel, and now the assembled models are Starfish and Molly, Chiaki, Larry and all of a sudden also Viola popped up, I supposed she was all the time working with the same agency that Molly signed up with as well.
Job overlapping and internal tensions not even considered, it all of a sudden seems to rain every second day at least, and by the all models can be assembled for a shoot it will start drizzling half an hour later.
Not an easy task to get done, that’s for sure. Here some first shots from session one, and yes, it seemed a good idea at the time to include the animals Muschi, Goebbels and MiuMiu, the dog on a leash (!) and the cats decorated with colourful silk ribbons around their neck, neither of them is used that, no comment on that idea:
Josiane Keller “group shot outside – Chiaki leaning back Starfish on a rock” (2017)
Starfish had to sit on that rock with Muschi, what you can’t see here is that Starfish has extreme vertigo, already a bar-stool is too much for him, so this was quite daring, mildly put, and getting him up there even less than getting him safely down…

The director of the shoot thought it would be nice if Viola gets to hold Goebbels, because somehow he thought the dog would go well with her pink hair or something. Viola really likes dogs and has never in her life met an unpredictable monster like Goebbels, in particular now that Goebbels got somehow, do not ask, used to Starfish, but Starfish was stuck high above everyone on a rock and trying not to fall down, and Goebbels was about to attack everyone who seemed to separate him from Starfish, not knowing where exactly Starfish had gone. Goebbels starting barking, Starfish shouting at him, trying to calm him down and all others tried to keep a peaceful advertising face, in one word: CHAOS. Considering all that what was really going on the shots look rather peaceful…

Alexander is one year old and has grown from an infant to a toddler. Interesting thought, as opposed to the other puppets, Billy, who has died and infant Alexander will be the only puppets so far I definitely cannot use in any shots any more, because according to to the logic of human life time on earth they are both gone. Very sad, as I love them both! Nothing lasts forever.

As it turns out, also Larry is modelling for that poster. That must be some poster! Since Larry’s kimono is expressing what he wants to express to his immediate surrounding (or to himself) there were so far no complaints from him about the job.
And once more we find ourselves in the upstairs guest room of the 赤いエプロン red apron bar, shooting photos, whilst none of the girls were around today; I have not seen any of them all day long, God knows what they are up to, but I learned sometimes to ask no questions, so meanwhile here are Larry’s shots:

Strange days. On one of the strangest days so far, (as long as this is a strange day and not a “normal” day we are still OK) I came across heavy rain and this very wonderful hole in the wall:

* images from movies now showing:
“Ghost Algebra” (Peephole Edition), Janie Geiser, 3:20 minutes 2016/2009
“Inconsolable Objects”, Susan Simpson, 2:40 minutes 2016,
because of the strangeness of the day today the show was closed.

Meanwhile back home the fabric selection for Larry’s kimono, who also is starring on the Showa-inspired poster with the girls.

The others will be wearing all these flowery cheerful designs, so the question is, which one would be matching and give a masculine element to it all (yes, Starfish is offended, but what can one do?!)

As it turns out: also Chiaki is on the bill for that poster, and also she got a fabulous kimono. Chiaki being Chiaki she is the only one who pulls it off not only wearing the thing with confidence, but also being able to pout it on, seemingly without outside help.
Generous as she is she let me take some test shots, in the upper room of a small Japanese snack bar 赤いエプロン “akai epuron” (the red apron), God knows what purpose this little room has served over time, tonight it is a photo studio.

Tonight Molly made it home a bit earlier and brought along the kimono which she will be wearing for the poster (obviously Molly will be modeling with Starfish); her kimono is not unlike the one Starfish is currently so much sulking over and based on that insight, for time being, she managed to comfort him and they made up.
