teapots and pseudo-functional objects

* German “Gerät”: device, apparatus, equipment, appliance, instrument, utensil, tool, set, implement, gadget, piece of equipment.

This category shows teapots and pseudo-functional objects, that can be roughly divided into two types of work:

  • sculptural objects that assimilate natural material like tree bark or stone in the shape of human tools, such as a rock formation in the shape of a teapot, or a piece of hollow tree trunk that could serve as a cup
  • sculptural, potentially functional objects (also mainly teapots), that are inspired by industrial garbage thrown away in nature that started a process of corrosion

The borders between these categories are fluctuating, as some human-made item that has been exposed to the direct impact of natural processes, could be for instance entirely covered by lichen, fungi or algae; at the same time in nature, we find formations entirely produced without human impact that coincidentally take on shapes like man-made objects, which could be for instance teapots or spoons.

All of these objects are made from clay, an element directly from nature, but at the same time also man-made. Industrial garbage is, although not made individually by human hand, made by machines which are designed and built by humans; although they are serial produced and in new condition look all alike, once they are thrown away they become unique by individually different situations, i.e. being squeezed or broken or rust in specific areas; through this process of decaying, they become more close to natural elements.

The work is listed here in a piece-by-piece catalogue format, single specimens can be sold/exhibited, but the main exhibition format of this project is arranged in a multiple piece room installation [*see:Belief and Unbelief“- exhibition, Dohjidai Gallery Kyoto, JP, Oct 2020]; sold pieces are being replaced by different ones added to the project; the project is over time growing and changing.
