When working on my figurative work I strongly concentrate on the overall image, creating it in my mind like a 2D work, whilst I look at a 2D piece imagining it being “real” and so through my brain transforming in into a 3D work. I am still unsure to what extent other people share this way of seeing and if so to what degree it possibly depends on cultural background, like i.e. Chinese and Japanese ink painting is based on lines rather than value, whilst the calligraphy existing of a combination of lines is meant to depict an image.
I started to research the relationship between 2D and 3D, at first by drawing onto my figurative work to the stage where I decided to take the three-dimensional aspect completely out by taking photographs of my figures, turning them into 2D work. The question is: to what what extent is a photograph of a figure a two-dimensional piece, or is it rather a three-dimensional piece, since whilst it is obviously flat it is only readable to us because we imagine it as the real actual figure (and therefor three-dimensional)?
